Education Services For Children With Autism

As the prevalence of autism has increased astronomically in recent years, so has the number of available treatments and education options. Parents must sift through the many interventions and decide which is best for the education of their child. More and more parents are educating themselves; the treatment options are exciting and give hope to parents of children with autism. But the task of determining which treatments and education paths are best for each child is a great responsibility.

Once a child is diagnosed with autism, families have many questions and concerns. One of the major dilemmas is determining how a child with autism will be educated. Each child is different with unique qualities; the education of each child with autism is determined by their needs and strengths.

Autism is considered to be a spectrum disorder. It is a disorder characterized by symptoms that include repetitive behaviors or interests, deficits in social interaction and deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication. Furthermore, children with autism often have unusual responses to sensory stimulation. Children with autism may also display symptoms that include an inability to form relationships, delay in the development of speech, lack of imagination, repeated patterns of activities, extreme aloofness and insistence on consistency in routines and isolated areas of strong ability.

Research has determined that early intervention is crucial for children with autism. Early interventions include services from speech therapists, occupational therapists, adapted physical education, applied behavior analysis, social skills training and other therapies. Some of the services are provided through the local school district; however, many families choose to hire private therapists and aides.

Children with autism are eligible for special education services under the federal law once they turn three years old. The services include children who are in both general education and special education classes. Some parents keep their children in a general education class for their education with support services being provided for specialized needs. Many children with autism are educated in a special education class. Special education classes are designed specifically for students with disabilities and are taught by a special education teacher. A child can also be serviced by a resource specialist who is a special education teacher who either goes into a general education class or pulls students with disabilities out of the general education class. The related services that are available include school psychologists, school nurses, speech specialists, physical/occupational therapists and behavioral therapists. Other special education services available are community-based training for the older child and summer school for many special day class students. Services vary according to the child’s needs. A child with autism may have difficulty with communication and may need services specifically focusing on speech and language development. A child with Asperger’s disorder which is on the autism spectrum may have average or above average intelligence but may still be in need of services.

Services required for a child with autism will most likely change over time. The most important thing a family can do once a diagnosis of autism is determined, is to seek support and services. Recent reports reveal one of every 166 children is diagnosed with autism. Fortunately, the exposure of the topic is providing extensive and exciting research and hope!

Effective Study Habits

Effective study habits are essential for achieving and maintaining a high GPA. More importantly, effective study habits help you to store information in long-term memory, allowing you to use the learned information in a novel setting. Applying the following rules for studying will aid you in earning excellent marks in school.

Do: 1. Keep the area around your desk neat and tidy. If possible, the area should also be quiet. If you are having trouble finding a quiet place to study, try the local library or park. The library is a perfect place to have peace and quiet. The park may not be as quiet, but the fresh air can make studying less nerve-racking. If these options are unavailable, then try listening to some music while studying.

2. Have a scheduled study time for each school day. Remember that one classroom hour should be reinforced by two hours of studying at home.

3. Sit down for 45 minute intervals, followed by 15 minute breaks. Having an easily attainable goal, like sitting for set duration of time, is effective for increasing motivation.

4. Reward yourself if and only if you have met your goal for that study session. For example, if you plan to study one chapter and succeed, then you may reward yourself by doing something pleasurable. Examples of positive reinforcement are: food, exercise, videogames, etc.

5. Make correspondences between your class notes and your textbook. This will help you to fill in any background information not covered in class.

6. Prepare questions about the chapter that will be discussed in the following class. This will help you identify areas that you don’t understand.

7. Put any new words or concepts to use. The more you use the learned information, the more likely you will be to remember it. This is especially true for language classes.

8. Finally, review what you have studied just before you go to bed. You will find that you will remember the words very strongly the next morning.

Don’t: 1. Procrastinate. Cramming is not beneficial for producing long term memory.

2. Highlight. Highlighting is a form of procrastination, because you are saving note taking for later. This means you must use the book twice instead of once. Instead, make careful notes to compliment your classroom notes, along with page numbers so that you can refer back to the book if necessary.

3. Study on the computer. You are bound to be tempted to check your email or surf the net.

4. Leave your cell phone on during study time. No matter who is calling or texting you, usually it can wait 45 minutes. Having your cell phone on during study time can be a major distraction and is not conducive to learning.

5. Study just after you have eaten. Studies have shown that thinking is slower after having a meal.

6. Space out. When you feel your mind begin to wander, remind yourself to concentrate. If you are reading, using your finger is a good way to keep your mind on track. The movement of your finger on the page forces you to pay attention to what you are doing.

Educators Strive For Improvement In Detroit Schools

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 2:31 pm

Founded in 1842, the Detroit Schools are one of the nation’s largest public school systems. The Detroit Schools’ system is a district of choice, and is open to children who live outside the city. The district offers numerous academic and career/ technical programs. Among these programs are: the Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies School (the only one of its kind in Michigan), Davis Aerospace (one of only a handful of schools in the country where students can obtain a pilot’s license), multiple award winning performing arts high schools, Detroit School of the Arts, and Crockett Technical High School (is a digital technology school).

The Detroit Schools consist of 232 schools; 147 elementary schools, 31 middle schools, 28 high schools, 12 special education schools, 10 adult education schools, and 4 vocational education schools. Approximately 143,490 students attend Detroit Schools. Student/teacher ratio in grades K-3 is 17:1. Detroit Schools have a “minority-majority” population; 91% of students are African American, 5% are Hispanic, 3% are White, 0.8% are Asian, and 0.3% are Native American. The Detroit Schools cover a geographical area that is 138.8 square miles and serves a city population of 951,270 people.

Several issues are currently being debated in the Detroit Schools. Among them are student achievement, as measured by the Michigan Educations Assessment Program, or MEAP, debate over lifting the Charter School cap, and shrinking student populations.

A recent study on how the Detroit Schools’ students are doing show that students have improved their reading and math scores since a federal program (No Child Left Behind) began pushing for academic progress. The report found that students’ performance in Detroit Schools increased in reading and math at both the elementary and middle school levels. More students showed a higher proficiency in reading than in math. The study examined 5 years of test, race, poverty and other student data.

Debate over charter schools is hot. Proponents of the schools, such as Daniel L. Quisenberry, president of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies, said that “students make significant progress academically once they enroll in a charter school.” Detroit Schools’ District Interim Superintendent Lamont Satchel recently issued the following statement regarding a proposal to bring 25 new charter schools to Detroit: “The Detroit Public Schools system remains the best educational option for children in this city. We offer a richer variety of academic and extra-curricular options than both charter schools and neighboring public school systems. Above all, we vastly outperform charter schools in the city on standardized examinations.” The rich variety of Detroit Schools includes many different programs, ranging from performing arts, technology, media arts, commerce, finance, and, aviation.

Another issue that Detroit Schools are facing is a shrinking student population. Over the past 10 years, the district has lost more than 60,000 students. Much of this loss is due to the city’s declining population and shrinking birth rates, but a lot has been attributed to “poaching” from charter schools and neighboring public school systems. “This is a critical year for the [Detroit School] District,” said Lamont Satchel, Esq. “While we continue to face declining enrollment we must also confront the possibility of cuts in per pupil funding. …But we know that these problems are not insurmountable. We can overcome these challenges. And we shall overcome.”

Effective Goal-setting For A Successful Achievement

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:00 am

Having a goal in your life is important. Otherwise, you won’t feel the need to live on.

Yet, some can’t achieve the goal because of they don’t know how to set it effectively and correctly.

Yes, the goal setting is as important as the achievement. You’ll reach your goal a lot more easily if set it well.

Here are some important notes for you to comprehend on an effective goal setting:

• The most important thing in setting your goal is to be precise. Try to include time, date and other details to ease you in the process. Also, it helps you measure the achievement.

Write your goals down on paper so that you can avoid any confusion. It also can help you commit to your own words.

• Try to set goals over something that you will still be able to control. This can help you guide your accomplishment in the goal. Avoid anything that might have external factors that might keep you away from achieving your goal.

Try not to make goals based on a reward system. It might highly motivate you at the commencement but once you achieve these types of goals you might not feel as much personal satisfaction.

• It is extremely vital to set a realistic goal. Don’t set a goal that is too high for you. You have to know your level of performance. The goal has to be set within the levels. One or two levels higher will be acceptable. But, five to ten levels higher will just end you up in desperation for not being able to achieve the goal.

• Yet, don’t make it too easy when setting your goal. Low goal is easy to achieve but you won’t get as much satisfaction.

The process of goal achievement should also be a process for you to be a better person, to be more self-confident. If you can achieve a big goal, it will surely raise your self-confidence level. Just get yourself be challenged by your goal.

Don’t be afraid of failure. Yet don’t let it get you drowned.

• Thinking through your goals before you make them. This way, you can end up making only wise goals.

You need to go through several details and factors before finally setting the goal. First, consider the other commitments that you have made, will it be keeping you away from your effort to reach your goals? Second, how much time you have to devote to achieving your goal? Do you think you have that much of time? Third, what are the skills that you need to have to help you reach the goal? Forth, think about alternative ways to achieve the goals.

If you have set the goals in a correct and effective way, you can now do all you can to make them come true. Good luck!

Eight Graders Who Fail Will Be Held Back In The San Diego Schools

The San Diego schools is the largest school district in the state. Last year, almost 13 percent of its eighth graders failed two or more core subjects of English, mathematics, history and/or science. This does not include those who received Ds. They were all grades of F.

The San Diego schools is cracking down. Beginning with the current eight grade classes within the San Diego schools, these students will be subject to a new policy recently passed by the San Diego schools board with a vote of four-to-one. A new retention policy puts forth that any eight grader who fails (grade of F) two or more core subjects will be held back to repeat the eight grade. If the parents of such San Diego schools’ students object, then those children will be passed on to high school but must actively participate in a ninth grade intervention program.

There was much heated discussion about retention versus social promotion (passing San Diego schools’ students on to the next grade, when they are not prepared) before the vote was taken. The one dissenting vote was by San Diego schools’ board trustee Shelia Jackson, who argued that the causes for such failures should be addressed before punishing the students. She noted that the children did not fail on their own &ndash teachers, parents and counselors participated, as well.

Some San Diego schools board trustees felt that the threat of retention would give the failing eighth graders incentive to work harder and get back on track. Jackson felt they were punishing the students for possible ineffective teachers or teaching methods.

All San Diego schools board trustees did agree that intervention programs for failing students should be implemented as early as elementary school to guarantee student success later in school and career.

The San Diego schools’ board trustees did not discuss what specific intervention programs would be provided to eighth graders who are held back or to those passed to the ninth grade at their parents’ request. The design of such programs will be left to each individual middle or high school, giving them the ability to tailor their programs to the needs of the students.

Retention is not a new method to assist failing students. It is widely used across the nation. Even the San Diego schools have used it in the past. Almost five percent of the San Diego schools’ sixth and seventh graders (more than 400 children) were retained in 2001 and almost three percent of first graders (360 children).

Superintendent Carl Cohn sides with Jackson, wondering if the new retention policy will hurt the San Diego schools’ students more than help them. He believes that retention only accelerates the drop out rate, and studies have proven Cohn correct &ndash students held back are more likely to drop out of high school, than those promoted on to the next grade.

Emergency Preparation Tips for Typhoons

Almost all countries near major ocean bodies are plagued occasionally by the occurrence of typhoons. In the Pacific, the weather disturbance is widely called typhoon. It is cyclone in the Indian ocean and in the United States, where most often it comes from the Atlantic, it is called hurricane.

A typhoon is a massive accumulation of destructive winds and torrential rains over a huge body of water, particularly ocean. The accumulation is facilitated by an area characterized by the presence of a low-pressure, which makes evaporation and wind development faster.

Typhoons do not develop overnight. Often, it takes about a few days before one is developed. Usually, typhoons start as thunderstorms that accumulate strength and intensify into a massive weather disturbance.

Typhoons are easily tracked and monitored by weather satellites because of their huge radius and accumulated cloud system.

Thus, weather bureaus are always able to track a development of one, making it possible for concerned government and safety bodies to release typhoon warnings for the safety of people who might be affected by the weather onset.

A typhoon is an almost predictable calamity. Almost, because its tracks can easily change, but certain, because its presence is easily monitored.

Preparing for a typhoon

Countries that are always visited by typhoons have instituted safety measures to prepare people for the destructive weather occurrence and to help curb, if not totally prevent, injuries and casualties.

When a typhoon is about to hit an area, typhoon warnings should already be released, at least 24 to 48 hours before the expected landfall of the weather disturbance.

Thus, people, whose residences are within the warning areas, should first and foremost make the necessary safety precautions. Here are some of them.

• Store enough food and drinking water that would last for a few days. The typhoons may bring in torrential rains and destructive winds that may ruin infrastructure. Groceries and markets might not be able to resume operations after a typhoon, so make sure your supplies would last until the situation goes back to normal.

• Make sure your home is sturdy enough to endure potential gusty winds and flash floods. If not, just evacuate and go to designated safe evacuation or safety center.

• During the typhoon, you may opt to put off electric currents within the house to prevent any electrical accidents. The local utility firm will voluntarily cut off the electric supply.

• Typhoons bring in rains and winds so make sure you have jackets and umbrellas, in case you may need to flee.

• If your home is safe enough, just stay indoors before and during the typhoon to ensure safety. During typhoons, electric wires might fall down to the streets and compromise safety. Same goes for falling, or even flying debris, which are the usual cause of injuries and casualties.

• Always monitor news updates regarding the typhoon. Get transistor radios to make sure there would be no news blackout in case the electric and communication facilities shut down.

Remember that typhoons are weather phenomenon. One can never prevent it from forming and coming over. However, what people can do is to help prevent the destruction of the weather disturbance.

They can help by not becoming one of the casualties. Life is too precious and it is not worth losing it due to some occasional weather occurrence like the typhoon.

Emergency Preparedness For A Hurricane

There is nothing anyone can do when nature decides to leash out its fury. There is no way to stop it so people should brace for the worse and seek shelter.

In order to minimize the loss of life, most towns and cities have created emergency plans. Sirens are placed in strategic locations to announce a major evacuation; the emergency broadcast system is in place in the event that power and electricity has been cut off as well as stockpiles of food, water and medicine.

Those who live in the coastal communities will usually be battered by hurricanes. This happens between the months of June until November in the Atlantic and from May to November in the northern Pacific Ocean.

When this is first spotted on radar, the forecaster will already inform the public about it. There is no need yet to panic here since the weather conditions may change in the next few hours but if there are no improvements, it is time to activate emergency procedures.

The hurricane may pack winds exceeding more than a 100 miles per hour that can make cars, pieces of metal or wood cause severe damage to the home. Households can board up the windows and doors of the house with hurricane shutters and plywood.

People will rush to the supermarket to stock up on food, water and other essentials. These include candles, batteries for the radio and the flashlight as well as fuel for the generator.

All of these things are necessary especially water to prevent dehydration so every possible container must be used including the bathtub.

The most important which must never be forgotten is a medical kit. This should have bandages and some antibiotics to be able to treat anyone who is ill or injured until the person can be brought out to a medical facility for better treatment.

Should the incoming hurricane be classified as a category 4 or 5, residents are advised to evacuate and seek higher ground. It will be a good idea to travel light so only a few pieces of clothing, food and water must be brought into the vehicle.

The citizens are also advised to drive slowly and avoid panicking since this could cause accidents on the road.

The hurricane will pass within a few hours. This is the only time that people will be able to go out or return to see how much damage was done.

It is only after assessing the damage that towns and cities can say whether the emergency preparedness procedures that were sent in place were effective or not. One indication that it works is if no casualties are reported. This is because a house or even a building can be repaired but the life of an individual can never be replaced.

The people who live in the household can rehearse the emergency preparedness plan to see if some improvements need to be made. This is because time is off the essence in order to be safe in this type of crisis.

Emergency preparedness is key to ensure the survival of everyone present. People who live through this annually know what to do but those who are moving into the community should learn fast to be able to survive the onslaught of the hurricane.

Empowering Parents In The Oklahoma City Schools

Parents in the Oklahoma City Schools face similar challenge to parents around the nation. Preparing children for high stakes testing, trying to balance home and work, and preparing students for independence in a global economy are not small tasks for parents or teachers. What the children of Oklahoma City Schools have in their favor is a local community that is unusually supportive of public education. In 2001 residents voted in an historic bond initiate that used future taxes to provide new and renovated school buildings for all Oklahoma City Schools. Such a wide margin of public support is sadly unusual.

But give the community involvement the parents of Oklahoma City Public Schools really seem interested in what they can do to give their own children, and local schools, the best chance possible. As a former teacher and parent of school-age learners, here’s my advice on the three critical steps parents can take for their children’s success.

Read Together

Reading is the single most important skill for students in the Oklahoma City Schools. Until the third grade your child is learning how to read. But after that, he or she will be reading to learn. In essence, the success in every other subject depends on the ability to read. Yes- it is that important that you and your child set aside 15 minutes a day for reading. It doesn’t matter who does the reading, it matters that it happens.

The Oklahoma City Schools have a great library system. If you’re not a reader by nature ask the librarian at your Oklahoma City Schools’ librarian for family read-aloud recommendations. There are books that you will enjoy reading to your child. And hey- turn off the TV on school days. Is it more important that you child is successful in school or that she learns the critiquing techniques of Simon Cowell?

Keep Showing Up

The Oklahoma City Schools are generally very encouraging of parents and others who want to volunteer in the schools. The biggest challenge for parents is usually finding the time. But again, a large measure of your child’s success in the Oklahoma City Schools will be your amount of involvement. This may take some creativity if you work a job or two outside the home, or are a single parent. Some Oklahoma City Schools have elementary packets that they send home with parents to help assemble, cut, or color. The key is to let your children know what you’re doing, and to deliver it to the teacher so you have more face to face time. Or just stop by and have lunch with your child.

Support Your Child’s Teacher

The teachers of Oklahoma City Schools need parental support. Involvement, encouragement, volunteers, and backup with getting homework done….Your child’s age will factor into the ways you can support the teachers and Oklahoma City Schools. But the end result is the same. It will help your child to succeed.

Encourage The Path To Genius With Arizona Home Equity Loans

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 7:52 am

With the quality of education rapidly declining, there are very few universities that still offer excellent instruction. Short of sending your child to an Ivy League university, the next best thing would be the fine colleges and universities of the state of Arizona. As if it’s not bad enough that your child has to leave for college, it’s even made worse by the fact that he or she has to go all the way across the country for it.

It might be time for a change. After all, wouldn’t you like to be close enough to make sure that your child is making the most out of the education you worked so hard to provide? And considering the vagabond behavior of college teens nowadays, it wouldn’t hurt to keep a close eye on your child. Arizona home equity loans can make that possible for you.

Why Arizona?

The high quality of education provided by the universities and community colleges in Arizona are due in part to the Arizona Board of Regents or ABOR. The ABOR is the governing body of higher education in the state. It is headed by the state Governor himself and includes 8 other volunteer members. The ABOR has been responsible in making the universities and community colleges of the state among the best in the country.

With such a well structured educational system, your child is well on his or her way to a bright future. Arizona home equity loans can make sure that you’re with your child every step of the way. With the proximity to the universities and colleges that Arizona home equity loans affords you, you can give your unwavering support and guidance to your child just as if he or she has never left home at all.

Parents Watch

Of course, you remember how it was in college &ndash the wild parties, drugs, and alcohol. Though you know that your child has more than enough sense not to neglect his or her education in pursuit of fun, you would rather be close by to make sure. After all, the heady feeling of newfound freedom and the recklessness of youth is not a very good combination.

Arizona home equity loans allows you to be a part of your child’s college life. You may not be in the actual dormitory yourself, but at least you will be close enough to know if something is amiss. With the location that Arizona home equity loans give you, you can closely monitor your child’s performance in class. You can also be privy to the comings and goings and the people consorting with your child.

A Parent’s Legacy

With your child getting the best education there is and safely on the way to a successful career, you can rest easy knowing that you’ve done your part in making it all happen. After all, education is the only real gift that a parent can give to a child. It’s a gift that lasts forever. In fact, it’s more than a gift. It’s a legacy.
