Good Grades Are Nice - But, Mastery Is Better

When I was growing up, there was nothing better than bringing home a report card that had good grades on it. Oh, I wasn’t a straight A student, but I got my share of A’s and B’s. I also got my share of C’s and D’s. I guess I was what you call an average student. My parents always checked my report card and questioned any low grades and encouraged me to do better when they felt that I wasn’t working up to my abilities. Today good grades are still the benchmark we use to determine if a student is going to be promoted or retained. The higher achieving students who are in high school usually strive for good grades in rigorous courses, because they know that their class ranking among other things will determine the type of college that they will be admitted to. Good grades are something that everyone wants, and for some reason, they’re just about what everyone gets. The two questions that I have are these: does everyone who gets a good grade deserve it, and is that grade a good indicator of the person’s ability?

I remember when I was a freshman in high school, and I struggled with Algebra I. I couldn’t catch on no matter what. The teacher was great, she knew her stuff, and she did everything to try and get me through this subject. I ended up failing the class. I told my dad that I would take the class again in my sophomore year, because back then you only needed to take three years of math. He wouldn’t hear of it, and he made me go to summer school. In summer school I really got a grasp of the subject matter. My grade was still only a C, but I really understood the material. I had mastered the content. When I took algebra two during my sophomore year I received a final grade of an A. That was one A that I felt I really earned. I felt good about the A, but I felt even better that I really knew the subject matter.

A student can earn an A in a class for a lot of reasons. He/she may be a very hard worker and really apply himself/herself. The teacher may be benevolent and award A’s to most or all of the students, the student might cheat on tests and quizzes, or the teacher may have cooperative groups set up in his/her classroom, which allows for group work to be turned in with everyone receives the same grade. In the last 20 years, the grading system has become progressively more liberal. Teachers almost never fail students anymore. I think two of the biggest reasons why the grading system in schools has become so liberal is because of parental pressure, and because teachers have been told by administration that they can’t fail kids. Parents who have kids in high school know of the competition that’s out there to get into good colleges. If their son/daughter receives a B in a class, they know it could throw of their child’s class ranking and their child might not be able to get into the college of their choice. Teachers fear giving a low grade because district scrutiny says that if they fail too many students, those failing grades are reflection poor teaching.

Society views good grades as an indicator of student success. The current brain research tell us that in order to determine if a child has mastered school related material they have to show that they retained the information 24-48 hours after they have been given a test.

If a student takes a social studies test on WWII and receives a grade of an A, does that mean that he/she has mastered the content? The only way to be really sure is to test the student again in a day or two. This is very unrealistic and I could never imagine any school doing this.

I have a friend whose son is attending Dartmouth College. I know that he never worried about his grades and neither did his mother. He was more concerned about learning the content of the course. The good grades came as a result of his attitude about learning. I don’t believe that he measured himself based on grades, but rather on how much he learned and remembered. When he took a class he always tried to figure out what he was going to get out of the teacher, or out of a textbook if the teacher wasn’t too good. It didn’t matter to him how the material was taught, and it certainly didn’t matter to him if the teacher was good or if the teacher was bad. He applied himself as a student and he himself worked to master the content. Successful people don’t really worry about a grade; they are more concerned about what they are going to learn. Knowledge to them is sacred, and they work to get as much of it as they can. Grades create competition and that’s a good thing. Good colleges are filled with good students who have worked hard to get where they are and who want to stay where they are. Excellent students like receiving A’s, but they know that that the grades they have received are only an indication that they have truly mastered the material that was taught.

Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Challenge To All California Schools

Long before Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for governor of California, physical fitness was at the forefront of his career. He won a succession of bodybuilding titles from 1964 to 1970. He had been named Mr. Germany and Mr. Universe by the age of twenty. Schwarzenegger brought bodybuilding to the national spotlight, when he won the Mr. Olympia title, holding it from 1970-1975 and 1980.

His acting career took off with the successful Conan the Barbarian with Schwarzenegger in the lead and chosen specifically for his perfect physique. In 1997, he was proclaimed the greatest bodybuilder of the 20th century, and the Guiness Book of World Records named him “the most perfectly developed man in the history of the world”.

Among his many business ventures, Schwarzenegger owns World Gym Enterprises and All Star Fitness Products, and is co-responsible for the Arnold Classic Pro Bodybuilding and Fitness shows. Additionally, he headed the Council on Physical Fitness and Sports for former President Bush.

Is it any wonder that, as governor for the state of California, Schwarzenegger wants California schools’ students to exercise more, eat better, and be more physically fit. To that end, he has issued a challenge to all California schools’ students in order promote an increased level of physical activity.

He wants all kindergarten through 12th grade California schools’ students to run, jump and squat for 30-to-60 minutes a day, at least three times a week for the next four weeks. The incentive &ndash the school with the highest percentage of participation at the end of the four-week challenge wins a new fitness center/gymnasium. The next eleven school runner-ups will each receive $1,000 with which to purchase fitness equipment.

Schwarzenegger’s promotion of healthy California schools’ students doesn’t end there. Two bills have been introduced to improve school nutrition, effective July 2007. One bill requires all foods sold in California schools’ vending machines to meet high nutritional standards, regulating the number of calories for both fat and sugar. The second bill limits the type of drinks sold at California schools to water, milk, and some fruit and sport drinks that are low in sweeteners.

Not only is Schwarzenegger big on physical fitness and its benefits to California schools’ children, who are among the nation’s growing obese statistics, but a statewide review on physical fitness within the California schools was released last November 2006. The findings were atrocious.

The study found that nearly half of the California school’s ninth graders could not briskly run one mile. Almost 1.4 million California school’s students were tested in fifth, seventh and ninth grades. Less than a third met all minimum benchmarks for body fat, abdominal strength, and flexibility.

Governor Schwarzenegger is doing what it takes to help California schools’ students become and stay physically fit. If children do not do it while in school, it can affect their entire adult life with obese-related illnesses and health problems.

Parents, teachers and California schools interested in participating can register online and track their schools’ progress against other California schools at: .calgovcouncil.org.

Go The Extra Mile To Learn French

Learning how to speak the French language is going to get you only as far as how you understand the lessons. As for the practicality of using the language, there are various ways how you can improve it. By putting extra effort to what you want and need to remember, say a French phrase, you then develop a way on how to append it to your normal day to day activities.

The same application goes with the grammar of the language. It could be another language aside from French but most of us already have the same perception about grammar no matter what language it is going to be. And it’s most likely that learning grammar is boring. But learning a language can be fun if you desire it to be.

Dedication is what it takes. For French language learners, striving to speak in French everyday with anyone is a big help. Learning from a French program on TV, listening to a French radio station are just several of the many things you can do to master the vocabulary of the French language. It is effective, watching TV with lessons on French because it does help a lot in making one understand the words and how it can be appropriately used.

Doing all these things in an English-speaking environment is a big hindrance from your goal though as far as using the language as normally as you could. If possible, try (but not force) to inform yourself with just about anything using French. Though it is most likely that you will not be able to immediately fly out to France to immerse yourself on the language (since language immersion is still most effective in language learning), but it does make a difference if you already start handing French words to yourself, no matter how slow it’s going to be.

Guidelines On Seclusion And Restraint Of Students Adopted By The Michigan Schools

In December 2006, the Michigan schools board approved a new measure that affects students within the Michigan schools &ndash the use of seclusion and restraint for unruly students.

These disorderly control techniques have been used within the Michigan schools for several years; however, parents and educators, alike, have been clamoring for more definitive guidelines on their use in order to protect both the students and the educators who must employ their use.

The adoption of new state standards on the matter by the Michigan schools board in December comes after a year-long study by a group of educators, parents and advocates. The group gathered extensive testimony and discussion from the public over several months. Advocates on all sides were heard. According to Michigan schools president Kathleen Strauss, there were many people on both sides of the debate &ndash some who wanted to keep their use, some who wanted them eliminated, and others who wanted their use modified and/or more tightly regulated.

The new seclusion and restraint standards provide guidance to those who must implement them and definitions of appropriate situations for their use. The standards outline general awareness training requirements for all Michigan schools’ staff, including pre-service training for teachers new to the Michigan schools. They also provide for comprehensive training for key identified personnel in each of the Michigan schools.

The standards provide clearly outlined procedures for giving a problem student a way out of the situation and require that specific school staff be present during the use of either seclusion or restraint of a student. They clearly outline the limitations and acceptable, emergency conditions for use of seclusion and/or restraint of a Michigan schools’ student.

The Michigan schools now prohibit any practices that could cause harm to a student. The standards do not allow for prone restraint of a Michigan schools’ student, which is on the floor and face down. A student is not allowed to be secluded or restrained in any manner that could restrict his/her breathing, whether on the floor, standing, sitting, bending over, or kneeling. The standards prohibit seclusion of preschool children.

Michigan schools board member Reginald Turner noted that the adoption of these standards was not intended to encourage the use of these control techniques. Rather, because there were no previous regulation of seclusion and restraint, the new standards are to limit their use and control how they are used.

Additionally, the Michigan schools board standards require notification of all uses of seclusion and restraint. Each of the Michigan schools must keep accurate records concerning each use of seclusion and restraint, and they must develop reports that give accurate accountings of their use for submission to the board.

Parents and educators both see this move by the Michigan schools board as a positive one. With limitations and conditions for the use of seclusion and restraint, the safety of the children in the Michigan schools become the priority, while each school retains the ability to restore order to their environment with last resort measures. Hands are not tied, and the children are safe. You cannot ask for a better solution.

Hanging Out Earning An Online College Degree

Could you ever imagine hanging out at home by choice, and earning an online college degree in the process? Many people think that obtaining an online college degree is something that requires frequent trips to the computer lab and ongoing technical issues. It is anything but this way when you enroll in your choice of online college degree programs. The simple fact is that with a steady internet connection you can access the most powerful and effective programs. This sounds easy, but it does take effort. For the self-motivated, online programs are great ways to get an education.

The fact is that most online college degrees are based upon the self paced method that allows students to work at the time most convenient for them. Given that most self paced online programs are still in someway regimented by a timeframe, within this timeframe one can obtain an online college degree in a manner that suits the needs of the person and can still be somewhat flexible. This means that you will literally be able to login, and deal with every aspect of your online education, and your online college degree program specifically at a time suitable for you. This will allow you to meet your personal or professional needs while obtaining your degree.

Earning an online degree can be individually structured to meet your specific timetable. You will never have to take an online degree class at a time that is not going to work for you. Essentially, you will be earning your degree while allowing life’s priorities to come first, and your education will fall into the place that is best suitable for you. This means that for most classes you will be able to work at night on your coursework if you have to work during the day, and vice versa if you have a night job. With the recent advancements in technology and broadband connections, one attending online degree programs can watch video and do coursework anytime in as much clarity as if it were being played on their television.

So what is the downside of being able to hang out and earn your online college degree at the time you prefer? The answer is that you still must do the work, which means that you must be self disciplined enough to deal with the intensity of being enrolled in college, and especially in a self paced online college degree program. This is not a great fit for everyone, as self paced does not mean no pace, and in order to earn your degree you must be prepared to work, and be prepared to make sacrifices, just as you would in any traditional college degree program

While earning an online degree is much different in scope and breadth than earning a traditional four-year degree, it is similar in the fact that both ventures require a considerable amount of work. This means that one must be prepared to give the online college degree as much effort on studies and the coursework as they would if enrolled in a traditional program. Taking advantage of the online college degree program’s flexibility is the key.
