Homeschooling Setups That Make Your Home Education Run More Smoothly

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 3:50 pm

So many parents are turning away from public education to home-schooling options. While home schooling does increase the amount of time parents must devote to their children and usually means one parent forgoing earning income to teach, home-schooling may provide a better, richer education for a more well-rounded child.

An environment in the home should be set up for conductive learning. Teaching your child to read in the middle of a family room may not be the best setting and could be disruptive to learning. Choosing a room to devote to educational means and for storing school-related material is important. Children learn that this room is for school and the rest of the family home is for socializing and play.

How you set up your home-schooling room is important as well. The room should be one in a quiet area without disruptive noises or distractions. The area should be kept clean and neat at all times, and children should be taught to put away their materials and books after working with them. This behavior taught in a public school system is good to practice in home-schooling environments as well.

To that end, have storage centers that allow sorting of materials and easy clean up after use. Racks with bins or storage drawers where children can put away arts and crafts materials or pencils and crayons are a good idea. There are many storage center options on the market today to keep school materials neat and tidy.

Provide furniture that is scaled down to child size. If you visit an elementary school, you’ll notice that all the desks and chairs are small, making them easy for children to use. They’re also more comfortable for children, making learning less of a chore than having to reach up to write on a desk that is too high. Bookcases should also be child height, so that the child can reach without a parent having to worry about anything toppling over.

Watch for signs of boredom or frustration while the learning hours pass. If you see your child becoming tired or frustrated, take a break. Some children need to stop and absorb what they’ve learned before moving on, and a small break can be conducive to better mental processes. Just like adults, kids need a chance to get up, move around, do something else, and come back to the problem at hand.

Have a small reading area set up in your room, with a rocking chair and a bookcase full of stories your child can leaf through or read. Alternatively, you can have an activity center for painting or drawing and take a break from learning by painting a picture on the topic at hand. If you want to integrate a little child psychology, have your child draw a picture about how he was feeling before the break and how he feels now.

To make the process of creating up a home-schooling environment even better, include your child in the setting up of furniture and decorating of walls. Your child can choose pictures to hang or select a growth chart to measure height every week, or help paint the walls a color that is calming and relaxing, like blue. Including your child in the preparation for home-schooling can make your son or daughter feel more encouraged to participate in the venture rather than feel stuck at home.

Homeschooling With A Packaged Curriculum

Once the decision is made to homeschool, the next major issue is which curriculum or methodology to use. While there are pros and cons for every option, this article will focus on homeschooling with a packaged curriculum.

A packaged curriculum will usually include all the books, lesson plans, and scope and sequence planning needed for an entire school year. Some providers also include additional services for enrolled families. These services can include counseling, grading, report cards, and even diplomas. While this path is often more expensive, there is the advantage of having everything already planned out in advance. This alone is a great time saver, which becomes more of an issue when there are several children being homeschooled in one family.

Another point to consider is accreditation. When a program is accredited, it means that it has been reviewed by an outside agency or committee and has been determined to meet certain standards. Why would this be important? This will help greatly when time comes to apply to college. If the student has a high school diploma from an accredited high school, there should be much less difficulty proving to admissions offices that a high school education has indeed been completed. Also, credits may be more easily transferred to another school if necessary.

When we first decided to educate our children at home, I was faced with researching and planning what to cover in a school year for four children - grades 6, 4, 2, and preschool - with about a month to have it complete. The packaged curriculum I chose from Seton Home Study School proved to be invaluable. As I was brand new at this, I honestly did not know where to start. The more I read about the various educational methodologies and the limitless choices of textbooks, the more I realized it would make more sense to enlist the help of a company with many years of experience.

By using a prepared curriculum, I can be assured that each child is covering all the most important topics and acquiring the necessary skills. The lesson plans do just that - plan out each lesson for us, including many suggestions for additional activities and enrichment. They also include many recommended resources, especially pertinent websites for further study.

One of the chief complaints about packaged curricula is that they are not very flexible, and tend to be quite rigid regarding what to do when. Our experience thus far has not been so. The program we use emphasizes that parents should adjust the program to fit the child, not the child to fit the program. In reality, nothing is actually “required.” We can use or skip any suggestions we choose. The only true requirements exist only if you want an actual report card or diploma. Certain assignments must be completed and submitted in order to verify completion of the material. I find that keeping a portfolio of work that has been graded by an outside party is a good “insurance policy” against the regulations imposed by our state.

While I readily admit that not everyone will work well with a packaged curriculum, this option does provide many advantages. For anyone who is just starting out and has little or no experience working out a plan of study, a prepared curriculum provides a solid beginning and helps the parent learn more too. Many families will start with a complete packaged curriculum, and then as time goes by, they start making modifications and adjustments as they gain experience and confidence. As can be seen, the many packaged curricula available today can prove to be a very useful tool for many home schooling families.

Homeschooling The ADD/ADHD Child

As homeschool parents, there are many options for teaching our children. I have found the variety out there to actually be overwhelming, but few resources actually meet my needs. My son is gifted, but has ADHD. As a clinician and a professor, I hated seeing him struggle in school. Each day he would tell me he had “Carnitors” (T-Rex’s for the rest of us) in his tummy. After meeting with his teacher several times, it became clear that the school was unable/unwilling to meet his needs to my satisfaction. Kids with ADD/ADHD need a place with few distractions, short bursts of learning followed by physical activity, structure and learning materials tailored to how they learn and learning times scheduled around when they learn best.

After spending several months and several hours each day creating his lessons piece-meal, I found a couple of wonderful resources. The first is AOL at school: .aolatschool.com. There is an amazing amount of information, links to complete online textbooks and more. This is where I go when he finds a topic of interest and he wants to know more. (Remember when we had to get our parents to take us to the library?) One of the benefits here is that it is FREE! The textbooks range from kindergarten all the way through high school and cover most topics.

The second resource I found serves as the foundation for our homeschooling curriculum: .time4learning.com. Time4Learning provides a multimedia, interactive experience for kids covering all basic subject areas. For children with ADD/ADHD, you can break it down into snippets of 10 minute lessons. Additionally, many of the lessons combine subjects. That is, the “Language Arts” lessons are often on topics of health, science and history. This helps ease my mind considerably, because I can know he is learning educational material when he reads. (Many of the so called reading books from his public school were no more than See Spot Run). The other advantage with Time4Learning is that they set your child up at his/her grade level.

As I said, despite the ADHD, my son is gifted. He is set up to do 2nd grade work (he is in first grade), but he can progress as fast as he can and still master the material, or he can have easy/review days and do grade-level work. For parents, you can create an assignment book that links Time4Learning assignments to the skills they were supposed to learn. I use this to record his grades for the school board to review each year. I have found customer service to be very receptive to suggestions, they are regularly adding new features and their customer support is prompt and courteous.

A third resource is .education-world.com/. This site has TONS of ideas, printable worksheets and activities. Since kids with ADD/ADHD have difficulty switching tasks, it is often preferable to have one “subject” per day and present it in a variety of formats (reading about it, watching a movie about it, applying it).

Other resources include:

Discovery School: school.discovery.com/

ABC Teach: .abcteach.com/

FunBrain: .funbrain.com/

SuperKids: .superkids.com/

Everything4Kids: .kapili.com/topiclist.html (This is geared to the older or advanced student)

KidsKnowIt: .kidsknowit.com/

These last resources do not have a syllabus or curriculum, but they are FUN. For the child with ADD/ADHD this is especially important. Some days they are too stressed, tired or focused on something else to concentrate on “the basics.” As long as this does not happen too often, it is fine to let your child do an off-topic educational activity that he or she is interested in. In our house it is usually wildlife (.enature.com), dinosaurs(KidsKnowIt) or space (NASA).

One suggestion is to set kid’s profiles up with icons on their desktops to only the 5-10 sites they are supposed to go to. My children will often stay on the coputer for hours if they can. Children with ADD get overwhelmed if they have too many choices and things to look at. This helps limit their distractions.

Sean went from a child who would look at a page in a book and say “Far too many words” to a child who reads to me and asks “Was I reading fluently Mommy?” I have gotten the time back in my day to start working part-time again. Between these all of these resources most any child and/or homeschool family can find what they are looking for.

Homeschooling Vs Public Schooling

The time has come for your child to begin his education, and you are faced with the ever present question: What should I choose? Homeschooling or Public Schooling?

Both offer advantages and disadvantages and we will discuss some of them in this article as it is best to know all the facts before making the decision.

Advantages of Homeschooling

Probably the main advantage that home based schooling has over public schooling is the flexibility. You can set the learning periods after your schedule and the lessons can be fitted to suit your child’s learning style. Also the homeschooling system allows a lot of changes to the curriculum thus making it easier for you and your child.

The learning activities are more practical as home based schooling is an unstructured educational program and parents can develop the lessons in a fun way that will make the child more eager to learn.

The other big advantage of homeschooling is of course lower expenses as nowadays public or private schools can be very costly. You can save the money for involving your child in different social activities that will develop his or her social skills.

Advantages of Public Schooling

The biggest advantage of Public Schooling is the social development of a child. While you can definitely involve him in other social activities none will be as effective as being part of the same group for several years.

Public schooling also gives you more time for yourself, your job and for the many household chores you need to do. Homeschooling can prove to be very time consuming for the parents as they have to be with their child all through out the lessons and also correct the worksheets.

You should make the decision by taking into consideration all these facts, by thinking about the time you can invest and the effects that homeschooling or public schooling will have over you child.

Homeschool And College Acceptance What Works And Doesn

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:03 pm

How Homeschooling Parents Can Assure their Homeschooled Students Gain Acceptance into America’s Well-Known Colleges and Universities.

Homeschool and College Acceptance What Works and Doesn’t Work in Homeschooling

How Homeschooling Parents Can Assure their Homeschooled Students Gain Acceptance into America’s Well-Known Colleges and Universities

You’ve all heard the mixed reports about college acceptance of homeschooled children. Some say colleges will not accept homeschooled students; others say they desperately want them. But what is the truth? Can homeschooled students have their choice of colleges and universities or is it a struggle to find one that will accept them? You will find most colleges and universities “homeschool friendly” if you prepare your homeschool student in advance.

The following report will outline for you several strategies that homeschooling families must use in order to assure that their homeschooled students are sought out by the best colleges and universities in America. And it’s not just about taking tests and completing applications for college enrollment. It involves the home school courses you choose, your extra-curricular activities, your community involvement and much more to meet today’s college requirements!

Bottom line is, colleges want the best students out there. As screening processes become more and more intense, homeschooled students must learn to begin the college enrollment preparation process as young as middle school. Don’t wait till high school to prepare for the necessary college requirements.

The courses you select can make or break your admittance into the best colleges and universities.

Let’s face it. A homeschooled student with a transcript full of vocational or general academic courses will not stand a chance against a homeschooled student with college preparatory classes. Furthermore, a homeschool student who waits until tenth grade to begin college preparatory math and science courses is already a minimum of a year behind other college candidates.

Begin in Middle School.

If your student has the ability to handle higher-level math courses in middle school, by all means start them then. At the minimum, you should aim to provide Pre-Algebra in 8th grade in order that your student can move on to Algebra I in high school. However, avoid the temptation to push a student into higher-level math if he or she is not ready. This will only set up a student for struggle and/or failure in the future, which will not only affect a student’s overall picture, but also his confidence to continue.

Select Courses that Prepare your Homeschooled Student for the Rigors of College.

The courses you select in high school can not only make or break your college acceptance but can make or break a student’s ability to succeed in a college course. Not only do you want to select courses that fit in with a college preparatory course of study, but that are also accelerated enough to challenge your student at a higher level. Finding the easiest Algebra course you can find will not prepare your homeschool student for success in a college atmosphere. Choose wisely.

Bridgeway Academy offers a variety of high school courses from vocational to honors and Advanced Placement.

A good self-instructional course is ideal for your homeschooling program since it will require less expertise on the part of the parent and more independence on the part of your student. The ability to work independently is one of the greatest assets that homeschool students bring to a college or university.

Access a typical college preparatory course of study at Bridgeway Academy’s high school site.

Advanced Placement courses are also ideal for the homeschooling student. Advanced Placement (AP) courses not only give students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while in high school but also to vamp up their college applications. There are currently thirty-four courses in 19 subject areas offered as AP courses. Scores on AP exams may help colleges predict which students are more likely to graduate on time and therefore cost the college less in student aid (and for that matter cost you less in college tuition costs).

Research conducted by the University of California, Berkeley, indicates that correlations exist between success in AP courses and success in college. Students who earn an AP exam grade of 3 or higher are more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years than their peers. Since AP courses are becoming more and more important in the college screening process, I encourage you to pursue at least one AP course in your student’s high school career.

Extra-curricular Activities add to your marketability!

Another critical element to your home school program is your student’s extracurricular and volunteer activities. To a college counselor, these are an absolute must! And to your student, they are an incredibly valuable addition to his or her development as an individual.

Not only will these extras strengthen your home school student’s college applications, the skills learned from volunteer work, sports and other extracurricular activities are essential for enhancing social skills, building confidence and enriching your student’s life. Therefore, no matter what your student’s aspirations, I strongly recommend you engage him or her in extracurricular pursuits and volunteerism.

In that case of building your college applications; however, students should choose activities they enjoy and stick with them. College admission counselors aren’t interested in seeing students ‘do it all.’ Instead, they are looking for a commitment and passion for an activity outside of the classroom.

Keep track of all activities and awards and include them on your student r

Homeschool ID Cards

The number of homeschool students grew from 1.2 in 2003 to a staggering 2.4 million in 2006 according to the National Home Education Research Institute. With this type of growth you have to wander what is the cause for the amazing increase in homeschool attendance.

Based on surveys, there are three primary reasons children are being trained at home instead of the government funded solution. The primary reason parents have chosen to train their kids is to incorporate religion into their curriculum. Tied closely are other parents that have decided to incorporate moral training into their courses. Both of these have been continuously removed from the education children receive when trained publicly. The third reason parents have chosen to train their own children is because the alternative is viewed as an inferior education in comparison to the education they could receive at home.

When reviewing the results of the education being provided these kids are commonly testing up to thirty percent higher than publicly educated students while saving taxpayers an astounding 16 billion dollars annually.

One of the major challenges these 2.4 million students and their teachers are faced with is being able to prove their status as homeschoolers. When students and teachers come from a public or even a private school they are provided with school ID cards. Alternatively homeschoolers are forced to seek out a solution for themselves when it comes to school identification.

There are several reasons homeschoolers need identification cards starting with the need to prove they are not breaking the truancy laws of the country. Commonly home schooled students are not on the same schedule as publicly educated kids. Having the ability to produce a school ID card would be a simple solution, but without one it appears the kid is ditching class.

Another reason homeschool students want identification cards is to receive the benefits that many retailers offer to kids in school. Even the local theater offers discounted ticket prices to students and teachers carrying their school identification card. Parents that have become homeschool educators can receive discounts from both office supply and school supply stores if they can prove they are teachers.

Other reasons for needing ID cards range from boarding a plane since 9/11 to even being able to take college entrance exams such as SATs. The reasons are numerous why teachers and students need an answer.

Creatively these homeschoolers have found their answer by printing ID cards on their home/office printer and then laminating them at the local office supply store. Others have found solutions to produce plastic ID cards. Plastic or PVC identification cards are obviously of a much higher quality than laminating paper cards, although until recently it has been an expensive alternative. One of the main reasons plastic ID cards have been expensive is because of minimum order sizes and setup charges often charged by vendors.

A new vendor, FullIdentity.com has developed an affordable plastic ID card solution that works well for homeschools. Students or teachers can design their school ID card online as well as upload their own pictures. Orders can be made easily for even just one ID card if that is all that is needed.

Homeschool Info That Every Parent Needs To Know

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 7:15 pm

Homeschool is one of the alternatives considered by parents and educators to traditional schools. Although its effectiveness has not yet been proven conclusively, there are sectors that champion homeschooling because it provides a much more flexible process that can be adapted to a child’s learning capability.

For now, most experts agree that homeschool can be the best alternative for students who cannot cope with ordinary school setting. This system is often given to students who find it hard to keep up with the lessons in class due to slow mental ability or those who have abnormalities and congenital defects that keep them from performing well in school.

Below are some of the information that one needs to know before considering a homeschool program for your child.

1. Lacking in social component

This is perhaps the number one argument against the homeschooling program. Because the child is taught at home, surrounded by people that they already know, they may have a problem dealing with people in their surroundings. This is especially true with children that have started the homeschool program at an age when they are still developing their social skills.

If your child is at this stage, better think twice before putting him or her in a homeschool program. Unless you can supplant a social component into his program, he will be missing so much in terms of learning how to interact with other people.

2. State laws in homeschool

You may not be aware of it but each state enforces certain rules and guidelines that parents and teachers of the homeschooling program should adhere to. Recognizing the potential effect of the program to the learning and performance of children, the government has chosen to regulate the program. Check with your local government offices for the laws and requirements.

3. Support Groups

There are support groups consisting of parents of children undergoing homeschooling program. Here you will find people who can help you establish a program for your child. They will also be able to provide you with first hand account of their experiences with homeschooling and will be able to advise you in case you encounter some problems.

4. Family involvement

Homeschooling will not only affect the life of the child who will be undergoing the program but also the lives of the people in the house. Not only will they have to cope with the schedule but also in a way help in the overall learning of the child.

A good way to start is that the smaller the steps and the smaller the units, the slower you go. Furthermore, structure sure you invest a enduring time on each step to facilitate your son or daughter in education the information.

* Reading and Math Code: Instruct only these two subject matters if you are running out of time. Adjust sure Tim and Lisa can read and knows their numbers. Supporting subject matters can be taught within the context of these two skills. Don’t skimp on reading or mathematics.

* Reading Trumps Quite: Another thought of reading, if your son or daughter can’t read, free of cost else proceedings. Sometimes you will empathize with to do minimal cost even so reading until your children catches on. Think of going through the world without reading? Exactly, this is why I mention this reason why.

For instance, some citizen’s schools offer nothing testing and will offer tip and tips on working with Tim and Lisa.

Homeschool Your Child To Vedic Math - The Worlds Fastest Mental Math System

Some questions to ponder:

- How could the Aryan civilization, near the Hunza Valley, 5,000 years ago, mentally compute mathematical operations that today only a calculator could achieve?

- And if the Math could not be done mentally, how could they do everything we know today, IN ONE-LINE? eg: converting the fraction 1/19 into a decimal is an 18 digit answer that requires 35 lines of exhausting long division, how could they do it in a one simple line solution?

- Why is NASA using this MENTAL ONE-LINE SYSTEM OF ARITHMETIC in the field of Advanced Artificial Intelligence? Why is INTEL using it in chip designing?

- How can your child become a Human Bio-Calculator?

- Is the current Western Math Curriculum keeping our Children in a state of limited intelligence?

You are home schooling your 14 year old teen in Math. You feel you can instill better values, character and education to your children. You want to give the Best to your child. You want to provide quality which is unattainable in schools. Imagine how your child would feel when he immediately realizes that you are teaching him powerful ways to do Math Calculations without any extra burden on the both of you. Infact he would now want you to take the Math Classes more often so that he gets a hang on to these new systems.

This system of teaching Math can complement your family’s strong learning system and can instill the values you want to develop in your child. It requires just knowledge of multiplication tables up to 9 to start learning it and it is easy to learn, Master and teach your child without being overwhelmed. Infact once you spend 2 minutes with your child on teaching him how to do this sum (shown here) he can at once teach 5 more of his friends to do it. It’s that simple!

Here’s a quick example of one of the Technique:

65 x 65 = ?

It is quite simple since both digits start from 6, so you take 6 and multiply with the next number 7 which gives you= 42 , the first part of the answer and take 5 and multiply by the next units 5 which gives you 25,so the final answer is 4225. Try 85 x 85 now. Answer 7225. Try 95 x 95 &ndash Answer 9025 in the similar way.

Now how long did that take? This method can also be said to be the fastest in the world in mental math.

This system has the prowess to speed up Math Calculations by up to 1500% and supposedly seemingly difficult calculations like 998 x 997 can be solved in less than five seconds flat. With this system you can home school your child into becoming a Human Bio Calculator in a matter of a week’s time.

The answers to the question posed by this article in the beginning are found by understanding the ancient Indian system of High Speed Vedic (Sanskrit for Knowledge) Mathematics. It was rediscovered by Tirthaji (1884-1960) who was dux of India in Math and Sanskrit Philosopher who wrote and spoke perfect English. He reached the position of a Respected Pope in India, toured the United States in 1958 giving math lectures in Stanford, Caltech and even MIT and discovered the math knowledge which can solve every known math problem mentally and faster. He called his book and the subject ‘Vedic Mathematics’ after the Indian Scriptures called Vedas which mean knowledge. It is absolutely mathematical, scientific and global in nature and has nothing to do with any religion. Which means any person of any religion, country, ethnicity, color or race can use it and apply it and enjoy its tremendous benefits all across the world. No wonder it is being used by students from around the Globe of every race and origin to making their math calculations easier and is increasingly getting popular. Even NASA, INTEL and Microsoft are using it for the high end applications of Vedic Math.

A Look at this High Speed Vedic Mental Math tutorials and slide shows confirms the fact that it is indeed a miracle waiting to happen to your child.

Any teenager can learn Vedic Mathematics and enhance his numerical abilities. It helps the students not only in traditional academics, but it also enhances the IQ by enhancing the analytical skills and thought processes. This happens because the system is very coherent and intuitive and uses both sides of the brain thereby giving the student the winning edge. It is very satisfying to see young children’s eyes brighten when they see and learn the High Speed Vedic system and techniques.

Thomas, a 16 year old was able to apply these techniques with ease and without confusion when he learnt the Vertically and Crosswise Formula of multiplying two and three digit numbers Mentally and in One Line. He was able to solve correctly over 75 problems in less than 10 minutes which normally takes from 45-90 minutes to solve. This is simply incredible.

So how do you get started and homeschool your child into this system in a week’s time?

First your child should be over 14 years of age and should know multiplication tables upto 9. That is the only criteria to learn this system.

Try going through the High Speed Vedic Mental Math tutorials and see if your child enjoys the new methods. Show them the slide shows. You would have live results for your self whether or not to choose this as an alternative means to learn Math.

Squares of Numbers ending in 5

Multiplying numbers by 11-19 in less than five seconds

Instant Subtractions

Speed Division by 9.

See if he shows an interest. It shouldn’t overwhelm or burden him in any way. It should be as natural as possible.

Ask Questions to us. Go through the FAQ on our website below. Clarify your doubts you would have before deciding to introduce your child to it.

If you feel satisfied and your child is showing interest order a book or a DVD Set of over 10 hours on this phenomenal system which would suit your child best. I am sure if you could do these methods and are wondering why you didn’t learn them as a child-remember you could relive your childhood by introducing them to your child now. You could be igniting such a spark in your child now that he could be using this system for all his life and even introducing them to the next generation.

Give your child the best of education unattainable in schools.

Home Education Disadvantages

Regardless of the face that homeschooling has gained popularity in the last 10 years, there are still very many of backers for community school ready and willing to provide their arguments and reasons to their neighborhood mom that has established to homeschool. As with any basis, there are two sides. I’m not here to charm you in one direction or another, in any case I would like to educate you with some of the arguments and let you choose for yourself.

It’s not so hard to sort out some of the apprehension that could come with homeschooling.

Here are some of the top reasons against homeschooling:

1. Lack of Social Interaction: This is the largest disagreement when talking to the public about home schooling. We live in a social world and social skills are hugely eminent in being able to successfully go through living. Kids who are isolated all week in their homes with little social contact risk not understanding how to deal with surplus communities that have different views than them or even be acquainted with a agreeable conversation.

2. Lack of Records: All the same most of us wouldn’t got back to grade junior high school if someone paid us, anyhow, it was these records out on the playground during recess, middle school dances, and even the canned food drives that were vital materials of what shapes children in their developmental years. Homeschooled youngsters are stripped of these historic events and it can negatively impact their developmental years.

3. Lack of Curriculum: Regardless there are very acceptable homeschool elements, there’s no way a parent can forge a entire schooling year that is at all similar to the value a schoolteacher can in a kindergarten class with a vide range of resources and their fingertips.

When trying to opt whether or not homeschooling is direct for you, its good to take account of both sides of the fence. These are just a few of the motives against homeschooling. These are some very relevant concerns, mull over them, analysis them, and assemble the commitment that’s promptly for you and the rest of your family.
