The savings are then passed on to the students.

How long to study for a long distant online degree? Well, Phoenix University Online claimed that on average, most students should complete their degree courses in just two or three years.

University of Phoenix Online also offers financial assistance and flexible fee payment plans. Students need to check with the university on the various forms of available financial aids.

Students will also have access to a full range of online research libraries and services. At the same time, they can interact with other successful professionals, sharing ideas, debating issues, and learning from their experience.

Throughout whatever degree courses the students are studying for, their teachers will provide guidance and feedback on their progress regularly.

All interaction is conducted online, so students can participate at their own time and convenience. They never have to rush from the office to class or miss a lecture because of a scheduling conflict.

So if you are a working adult and find that time is a precious commodity and yet you want to earn a university degree, why not enroll with University of Phoenix Online for a university degree of your choice?

Rutgers To Reorganize Alumni Association For The Better

From time to time, I write about Rutgers, the state university I know best. Rutgers is a very good school; U.S. News ranks my alma mater as one of the nation’s top 20 state universities - and quirky enough to be interesting to an education writer.

Rutgers is the state university of New Jersey; those four words follow the name in all school marketing, so people know for sure. Purdue, the College of William and Mary and most recently, the flagship campuses of the State University of New York are the only national public institutions that do not include the name of their state.

Rutgers University’s flagship campus in New Brunswick has been an exercise in organized disorganization for 35 years. The organized disorganization has preserved and protected the identities of four federated colleges, the first of which traces its roots to colonial times.

Before 1972, Rutgers College, the oldest school, was all-male. Livingston, a liberal arts college founded to address issues of social change in the late sixties, was the only co-educational institution. Students in agriculture, engineering and pharmacy affiliated with Rutgers, Douglass or Livingston for their housing.

Things got only more confusing after 1972: the ag school became Cook College, another liberal arts school while Rutgers College became co-ed, and competed directly with Livingston for students &ndash and resources. Today the Livingston campus provides housing for Rutgers College students, as well as their own and Douglass College is less a college than a residence life option for women.

No other flagship state university is organized the same as Rutgers. If had enrolled at the University of Maryland, for instance, I’d start as a University of Maryland student with an undeclared major and then apply to attend the school of business, journalism, education and the like. Even after I declared my major, I’d still be a University of Maryland student who’d become a University of Maryland alumnus, a Terrapin for life.

Not so at Rutgers; I’m a Rutgers College graduate, so I’m invited to join an association that includes the largest subset of Rutgers alumni &ndash but not every one of them. I also get solicitations to the business school’s alumni association because I have a Rutger’ MBA &ndash and they invite undergraduate business students to join. I’m also solicited by the graduate public policy school, because I took their undergraduate courses for my bachelor’s degree. There’s no university-wide association that all Rutgers alumni can be a part of &ndash and that’s damn silly.

Instead of one large association, I get hit up by three small ones that have overlapping memberships. I threw in the towel - joined none of them &ndash and gave the same money to the Touchdown Club, the group that supports the football team. Why? Because the activities are fun and most of them are free. I love college football. I’m a season ticket holder, the activities are all informal, and I get discounts to buy licensed football apparel. I get a lot for my money &ndash a lot more than I’d get from the alumni associations.

Rutgers got the message; the university administration wants to consolidate 19 separate alumni associations on three campuses into one. They will allow any of the legacy groups to soldier on, but there will be better-coordinated services for alumni within one association. This is necessary at a time when alumni desire services from the university, such as personalized Web content, continuing education and career services - that are not and never could be, managed by alumni relations.

What would I like to see from a single Rutgers alumni association?

• Membership for Rutgers’ parents; they want their children to succeed and they are in a better position to support the university while their son or daughter is starting life after college. There are also more “helicopter parents” than there have ever been in college communities. Development officers could use that to the university’s advantage.

• A Founder’s Week; there should be a huge celebration of the university’s history and accomplishments each year with events for students, alumni, their families and of course, parents. I didn’t know that November 10 was Rutgers’ Founder’s Day, until this year, twenty five years after I received my bachelor’s degree. That’s a good time to plan a Founder’s Week; it’s after midterms and before Thanksgiving. It’s also the best week to host a Homecoming football game.

• Low cost family events; alumni who graduated between 1980 and 2000 are not only in careers, they are likely raising families. It’s very difficult to attract them to campus events where their children cannot participate. Besides, a university should expose children of alumni to their campus at an early age; admission to Rutgers is a worthwhile goal.

• Customized Web content; I want to know about events and subjects of interest to me. Rutgers is a treasure trove of news, but my interests are very specific.

• An alumni career services office in New York City, to complement the campus career centers.

• A master discount card, as the students have, to shop at campus stores online and offline, as well as with participating merchants. Combine that with a hotel discount that students can also use, as well as discounts on Rutgers’ sports tickets for the teams that have no waiting list.

• Online networks for alumni to contribute their time to admissions and career development.

• The Rutgers print magazine delivered to my door each month, with a calendar of events &ndash with alumni and family discounts.

Rutgers has over 360,000 living alumni, and they have considerable buying power. It’s time for Rutgers to put that buying power to work. Alumni might not need another credit card, or insurance policy, but they are willing to support family-oriented events and quality services they can actually use.

So, for the new association, whatever it may be called, I suggest that they be guided by these words: School spirit and family values.

Romney Can

Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has fired two salvos on sex education since July, attacking Democratic candidate Barack Obama for his support of age-appropriate, medically accurate sex education for elementary school children, then going after the broader Democratic field for not rejecting the inclusion of gay-related issues in sex education for second-graders.

“Not one candidate was uncomfortable with young children learning about same-sex marriage in the second grade,” Romney said on September 26. “This is a subject that should be left to parents, not public school teachers,” he said.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton shared Romney’s view, in my opinion, saying that it should be parental discretion to discuss same-sex marriage with young children. Clinton also favors civil unions over same-sex marriage; she might be aiming for consistency in her views on these two issues.

But would a second grader understand civil unions, or even care?

First, I wanted to find out if same-sex marriage is taught in states that offer sex education to second graders; Illinois, for instance, Senator Obama’s home state, does not mandate sex education before the sixth grade.

The Sexuality and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) provides guidelines for comprehensive sex education for grades K-12. These guidelines recommend introductory instruction on homosexuality and tolerance in the early elementary grades (ages 5 through 8) and that “two people of the same gender can live in loving, lifelong committed relationships.” No mention of marriage or civil unions; those are not the only such relationships.

So, SIECUS, the leading advocates for sex education instruction, advises teaching a bigger picture, knowing that same-sex couples cannot have legally recognized marriages in some states. They are not asking parents and children to lend political support for same-sex marriage. They are educators, not politicians. Sex education professionals rely on these guidelines; they were developed over 40 years ago, continually revised as science advanced and policies changed. Educators and parents must work together towards a successful sex education curriculum, not in an adversarial relationship. That view is shared by sex educators and those who historically oppose some units of sex education.

New Jersey, my home state, mandates sex education for all grades K through 12. Human relations and sexuality are one of six modules of a comprehensive health and physical education program. The Garden State mandates 150 minutes of health education per week for all students and has a graduation requirement of 3

Rocket German Review - Good Or Bad?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 2:27 pm

I decided to write this Rocket German review after having a chance to look into the claims the product makes. Can you really confidently speak German in less than two months? I’ll answer that question and any more you may have in this brief review of the product, with the goal of giving you a good idea whether or not Rocket German is a course that can help you.

I love the idea of learning to speak other languages, but I am not in love with the time and headache associated with learning the vocabulary and pronunciation. When I heard that Rocket German could teach me how to confidently speak German in eight weeks or less, I was intrigued.

It turns out, Rocket German was designed with the user in mind. It’s easy to follow and the system is amazingly effective. Because it’s so interactive, you want to study the language. Unlike other programs that give you a thick book and a CD to listen to for pronunciation, Rocket German makes it fun to learn.

Whether you want to learn German because you want a higher paying job and being bilingual is the way to get it or because you’re going to Germany, Rocket German is the best way to learn the language. If you’re still unconvinced, I suggest trying the free six-day course. The multimedia course is engaging and easy to understand, something anyone can benefit from. Literally, in six days you can learn just as much German as if you spent six weeks studying with a different program!

All things considered, I highly recommend Rocket German to anyone who wants to expand their linguistic horizons. Thousands of people have benefited from the program, which proves that learning a new language can be fun. I strongly suggest giving it a shot, with a six-day free trial, you’ve got nothing to lose!

Sacramento Schools And The Trillion Dollar Question

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 1:07 pm

Sacramento Schools are the epitome of the problems and concerns held by all public schools in the state of California. Recent and ongoing debates about funding arts education, construction costs, and new initiatives play out in Sacramento Schools daily. The most recent fuel to the fire was added when a study titled Getting Down to the Facts was released: it’s an evaluation of the adequacy and efficiency of the current funding of California’s public schools. The study was conducted by a California non-profit educational think tank, Pacific Research Institute (PRI).

Given the state’s poor reputation in regards to education, most educators in Sacramento Schools weren’t surprised by the study’s conclusion that the state’s current educational funding system is dysfunctional. However, sensational reports claiming that even an investment of $1 trillion couldn’t fix the problems of California and Sacramento Schools ruffled the feathers of administrators trying to get money for their initiatives.

Dr. Vicki Murray, senior fellow in Education Studies at PRI, explained that the report did not say that the problems could not be fixed with large amounts of money, rather, “It found what research and common-sense have told us for a long time: spending more money on more of the same won’t reverse California’s race to the bottom. California’s infrastructure is so poor; it’s nearly impossible to know where education funding goes or what programs are effective. We shouldn’t spend more if we don’t know what’s working…reform must be our first priority.”

What will this mean for Sacramento Schools? It depends what politicians do with this information. Two of the big issues have been in arts education and construction costs. Currently local districts like Sacramento Schools fund 50% of monies for new building and school renovations. The state covers the rest. Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed upping the local commitment to 60%. Opponents claim this places an even greater burden on at-risk and low-income Sacramento Schools.

In the arts arena, however, the Governor made a splash with administrators in Sacramento Schools by granting the largest ever state allotment of funds for the arts in the summer of 2006. $500 million was committed to equipment for arts, music and physical education programs, while $105 was earmarked for hiring and training qualified arts teachers. Sacramento Schools rejoiced at this news because of the strong correlation between arts education and high academic achievement, especially in low-income children.

So even though educators and administrators in Sacramento Schools may agree that the educational system is dysfunctional, the lack of vision regarding the solution makes them nervous. Depending on the reforms proposed it’s likely that arts education could again lose funding (a common trend in Sacramento Schools). The report may also makes it difficult for Sacramento Schools to get the funding they want to support existing programs. And with both California and Sacramento Schools at the bottom of the educational barrel in national scores, that has everyone concerned.

Sacramento Schools Find The Perfect Partner

Corporate sponsorship of public education has become an incredible boost for districts trying to meet stricter federal and state mandates on tight budgets. Organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation, and the Ford Foundation have invested billions of dollars in the nation’s public schools. While this is essential, the Sacramento Schools are focusing on an even more important partner in public education. The Parents.

Importance of Parent Involvement in Sacramento Schools

Sacramento Public Schools are under the usual pressure to raise test scores, meet budget requirements, and improve graduation rates of its students. And there are many methods that they are using to do it. But a look at the parent education program of the Sacramento Schools highlights an awareness of the importance of the home environment that often gets lost amidst the frenzy for higher test scores. Numerous studies have proven the correlation between parent education, involvement, and socio-economic status to student academic success. And recent attention on the alarming achievement gap between minority and white students is warranted. But where does the solution begin?

For the Sacramento Schools- it begins at home. Teachers in the Sacramento Schools are quick to point out that, as early as the pre-school years, an involved parent has a direct impact on a child’s success in school. Parents who don’t speak English, are high school drop-outs, or have financial problems are less able to support their children.

Programs for Parents at the Sacramento Schools

The Parent Support Services of the Sacramento Schools offers a variety of programs to improve parenting skills, help parents understand the educational system, teach English skills to speakers of foreign languages, and assist parents with skills needed to create a stronger family unit.

The first way of connecting parents with the Sacramento Schools is Parenthaven, an educational television show that parents can access without even stepping foot outside of their home. However, the goal of Sacramento Schools is to attract parents to the schools. The Parent Project Jr.

Safety During Baby

You’ve done it. You’re kid’s finally not scared of the tub, gets the time of his life during bath, splashing water on himself and on you and sees bath time as a great opportunity to play, wonder and explore.

However, your job as parent regarding bath time does not end in making it a fun time for your kid. More importantly, it is also your responsibility to ensure his safety during baths.

Safety Tip 1: Be prepared. Everything should be ready. His towel, soap, shampoo, bath toys, tub, wash cloth, bath seat and all his bathing necessities should be prepared and should be within hand’s reach even before you settle your kid in his tub. If in case you forget something, don’t leave baby in the tub alone. Instead bundle him up in a towel and take him with you.

Safety Tip 2: Choose a safe place for bathing. The sink and the bathroom are ideal places for baby to take his tubby time. Be sure you place his tub on top of something sturdy so it won’t topple over. It’s also a good idea to place a rubber mat underneath the tub to prevent it from slipping. Aside from that, the place you choose to bathe baby must not have any dangerous items within baby’s reach such as razors, powder or breakable glass items.

Safety Tip 3: Test waters first before dipping your baby. Hot water may scald your baby while cold water may terrify him. Before letting your baby take the bath, test the water with your elbow to make sure it’s just the right temperature. To be doubly sure, test it with a bath thermometer to see if it’s 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Safety Tip 4: Never leave your baby unattended even for a second. It can only take as fast as a blink of an eye for baby to slip or fall off or for any unfortunate accident to happen. When the phone or doorbell rings, or the pot you’re cooking starts to smell like it’s burning, never dare to leave your child on the tub and risk his safety just to answer the phone or the door or to rescue your pot roast. Needless to say, your child’s life is more important.

Safety Tip 5: Be focused. Don’t let the television airing your favourite soap or a chattering neighbour distract you while you give your kid a bath. Always keep in mind that it’s in your hands to keep your baby safe at all times. Being distracted may cause you to accidentally put shampoo on his eyes or worse not be able to hold him properly. Babies are slippery when wet and it entails a lot of effort and focused attention to ensure that your baby does not slip out of your hands and is not harmed during a bath.

One of your main responsibilities as a parent is to provide a safe environment for your kid and to ensure that he is free from anything that may hurt and harm him. Keeping him safe at all times including during bath time is one of the things you should always keep in mind.
