The Abstinence Teacher Gets An ‘A’ In My Grade Book

Tom Perrotta and I have two things in common: New Jersey roots and novels about sex education; his latest work, The Abstinence Teacher is the only other novel, besides my own, The Sex Ed Chronicles, that I have read which covers a subject that is still considered taboo in some social circles.

The Abstinence Teacher has two main characters: Ruth Ramsey, a divorcee’ and high school sex educator who makes one inappropriate comment too many, drawing the ire of the evangelical Tabernacle church and its hell for leather Pastor Dennis, and Tim Mason, a former stoner and rock n’ roller, also divorced, turned born-again Christian and doting soccer dad. Tim is struggling to stay along the straight and narrow path, as defined for him by the very same evangelical leader who torments Ruth.

The descriptions of Ruth and Tim’s mental conflicts are fascinating. They are both searching for self-worth through someone else. Since their divorces, Ruth and Tim’s lives have taken divergent paths, but each believes that they have lost something that one might call faith. They are both close-minded, though Tim’s close-mindedness is manufactured from his relationship with the Tabernacle. It was interesting that Tim likened the fellowship of the Tabernacle to the camaraderie of the rock bands of his youth; both are closed circles that welcome loners who are taught to pity or look down on others who don’t fit in.

Tim has tried to embrace a Christian life, though his sexual desires for his ex-wife and unhappiness in his second marriage lead him to doubt his piety. Tim repeatedly returns to Pastor Dennis to reconcile his adopted faith. Tim and Carrie, his second wife, try to find sexual bliss under a church-defined set of rules; the rules for shopping, for instance, try to draw a fine line between naughty and nice.

Ruth has lived professionally by the mantra that “pleasure is good, shame is bad and knowledge is power,” however she doubts that her students are listening to her more medically accurate, age appropriate messages. In her private moments, she doubts her own sexuality, wondering if love, or just plain good sex, will elude her for the rest of her life. Her desperation reaches new heights as she seeks an old high school flame through the ‘Net.

Ruth and Tim’s paths cross at a soccer game where Tim has asked his team, including Ruth’s daughter Maggie, to join in prayer after a victory. Ruth objects, drawing further wrath from the Tabernacle faithful. Her first clash led her principal and superintendent to institute an abstinence-only sex education course that she lacks the heart to teach. Her second compromises her relationships with her two daughters: Maggie, who wants to continue to play soccer for Tim, and Eliza who uses her mother’s objections to public prayer as a means to consider evangelical fellowship for herself.

Unlike my work, The Sex Ed Chronicles, which takes place in 1980, a time before sex education had been adopted in many public schools; Teacher is based in our times. In Chronicles, I was guided by the history and politics of the late 1970’s. Teacher devotes more attention to the culture of fundamentalist Christianity than the art, science and politics of teaching sex education in public schools. In Teacher, sex education is a regular part of the school day.

In reading Teacher and Chronicles back to back, I noticed similarities. Both novels position sex educators under the belief that knowledge is power and show that sex education is too important and too difficult a subject to teach poorly in the classroom. I made the same point as an observing news reporter as Perrotta makes by getting inside Ruth Ramsey’s head. In Teacher and Chronicles, the teachers are also asked to swallow some pride. I will only say that Ruth is asked to swallow harder.

Chronicles and Teacher share concerns about abstinence-only sex education being something that is watered down and therefore, not taking too seriously&ndashunless it is consistent with the teachings of their family or place of worship. However, sex education outside of the public schools is less consistent from student to student, than inside the classroom&ndashand both sides of the culture wars acknowledge this point.

Then the academic questions that come from reading Teacher and Chronicles are who provides the views that will dominate, and not demonize, public school sex education? Which minority view will take center stage in a theatre where parents and students are a silent majority? Will it be activist conservatives (they are not all Christians; Orthodox Jews and Muslims share deep-seated objections to comprehensive sex education) or activist educators perceived to be liberal, or is it more appropriate to say, sexually liberated?

And, do students and school administrators really care about the material taught in those classes? There is evidence in Teacher and Chronicles that administrators care mainly about staying out of trouble that comes in the forms of negative press and parental pressures and, that most students will “learn” whatever their school system decides to put in front of them.

The Abstinence Teacher made me more concerned for the professional well-being and skin thickness of sex educators who work in settings similar to Ruth. A teacher cannot teach well when forced to suppress their own values to protect faculty colleagues from embarrassment. I likened Ruth Ramsey’s job to managing the late shift at the 24-hour convenience mart, a no-win scenario whenever you lose your cool in head-to-head or eye-to-eye combat.

For this reason, as well as Perrotta’s humorous and insightful scenes of sex re-education in our times, The Abstinence Teacher gets high marks in my grade book.

The Academic Divide: Graduate Students With Funding And Without

In many university departments, it seems like there are two separate groups of graduate students: those who have grants and assistantships, and those who don’t. Is it worth it to continue your education if you aren’t one of the select few?

In a word: yes. If you have been offered admission to a graduate program, but have not been offered funding, it is not a crisis situation. You should begin your school regardless.

If you have started graduate school without funding, you can always apply each year. You should apply for grants and assistantships (both research and teaching) each year. Some grant applications are due in early fall, so be sure to check out the deadlines of any to which you are going to apply. It might seem that you have only started school before you have to get your funding applications in.

Once you have begun your studies at a school, you have an advantage over those applicants who will be entering next year. You will know professors and be able to get references that count. Applying for funding twice will help show the department and the granting organizations that you are dedicated.

Remember that your school isn’t the only organization that can offer you funding. Check out your government websites (municipal, provincial or state, and federal) to find grant applications. Look at other organizations such as businesses, charities, and social groups that fund scholarships and grants each year.

Even if you can support yourself and pay your tuition by working during school, take the time to apply for grants and assistantships. It looks great on your resume, and will help you in the long run.

For the meantime, when you are trying to fund your first year of studies without help from the school or from outside sources, consider getting a loan to pay for your studies. You can get specialized loans designed for students, for graduate students, and sometimes even designed for particular fields of study!

Having a loan instead of working long hours will ensure that you have the time to complete the applications (which is very time consuming: it will take you days to get all of the materials written, your references gathered, your transcripts and other supporting documents). It will also mean that you are free to devote yourself to your studies. Demonstrating a keen attitude and enthusiasm for school will help you stand out in your professors’ minds. You want them to notice you, to respect you, and to help you get the teaching assistant or research assistant position that you are looking for!

In the end, if you truly want to go to school, you will be able to do it. Just carefully assess your funding options, and never give up on applications. Apply each year, and apply faithfully. It might not be fun, but in the end it could be what ends up paying the bills.

The Advantages Of Getting A Graphic Design Degree

Graphic design could be a great career opportunity for you. It’s a growing, rapidly changing field that takes both talent and technical expertise, and those who are good at it are in great demand. If you are considering college or thinking about making a career change, you might consider getting a degree in graphic design.

Why get a degree?

It is true that there are a lot of talented graphic designers who pretty much learned everything they know on the job or “by the seat of their pants.” Because the profession has matured, however, that’s rarely possible anymore. It doesn’t matter how much talent or expertise you have, you’ll probably need a degree to break into the field.

To be honest, that’s okay because earning a degree has lots of benefits. For one thing, there’s the whole college experience. Whether you’re a traditional (as in just out of high school) student or not, there’s a lot to be gained from the experience of going to college.

You make friends and contacts and connections within your future profession that you’ll be able to count on for the rest of your life. You learn the discipline necessary to start and finish a program. You learn about professional resources, literature and research. Most importantly, you learn how to learn. These are skills that you will need when you start to work as a graphic designer.

Another advantage of going to school and getting a degree is that it gives you an opportunity to build your professional portfolio and develop your resume. By the time you graduate, you will have worked on many projects, and you can add each of those to your portfolio. You will have worked with teachers who are respected designers and with professional designers who are working in a variety of industries.

Every experience you have, and every positive evaluation by someone within the profession will become part of your resume or your portfolio. When you graduate, you will have the knowledge and degree you need to get a job, and you’ll also have the tools, recommendations and experience that will open doors for you.

What will you learn?

Obviously, you’ll learn about graphic design, but that’s only the beginning. (Actually, it’s the end, because you tend to take your professional classes toward the end of your academic career.) You’ll take both general education and graphics design classes, and you’ll develop important professional skills.

General education: A lot of people think general education requirements are a waste of time, but don’t blow them off and don’t underestimate how valuable they will be to you professionally. People who earn a degree in anything are generally assumed to be educated, and there are basic things educated people should know. Part of being educated is knowing how to communicate orally and in writing, having basic math skills and knowing a bit about science, literature and art.

It’s important to be an educated person; it helps you to communicate with other educated persons. And graphic design is used in every one of those fields. Knowing a bit about them will help you when it comes to design an ad campaign or corporate brand package for them.

Graphics design: You’ll probably enjoy your graphics design classes the most. You will learn about art and about computer technology. You’ll learn about various kinds of media and how to use them. Composition, design principles, photography, animation and CGI are all examples of the kinds of things you will learn.

Graphics design is a rapidly changing field, and, even though it’s necessary to learn the fundamentals, much of what you learn in school will be outdated within a few years of graduation. You’ll be exposed to people, technologies and information that are on the cutting edge, but one of the most important things you will learn in art school is how to keep up with the changes in your profession.

Professional skills: In school, you’ll have opportunities to work on projects with other student designers and with professionals. These projects will help you learn professional skills that you can only acquire by doing the work. You’ll learn how to work with other people, how to be a team member and a team leader, how to work with clients, and how to work under pressure. You’ll learn about budgets and timelines and business practices. These “hands-on” skills will make you ready to enter the job market as a professional graphics designer.

What will you be able to do with your education?

We are a media culture, and graphics design is used in nearly every industry, corporation, job and school and home in the world. As a professional graphics designer you can work in the publishing, music or television industries. You could work for the government or a private corporation. You could work for a design firm, or start your own firm. You could become a freelance designer.

You could do anything from producing corporate reports to designing magazine layouts to creating corporate brands. You might create logos or signage or graphics. You may work with audio-video media or print media. You could help design computer games or animated movies.

The employment future for graphics designers is good. There are plenty of job opportunities and lots of variety in the type of work you could do. Graphics design is a great profession, and getting a degree in it could be the beginning of a rewarding career for you.

The Advantages Of Interactive Books For Children

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 6:01 pm

There are many technological tools on the market today geared towards parents who wish to help educate and entertain their children. Computers have become a big part of that technology, from the more simplistic portable computerized toys to actual computer applications designed to help children acquire useful skills while promoting fun. Interactive books are among those applications.

The concept of the interactive book is simple; to help provide children with the fun stories they have come to love, while allowing them to interact with the characters in a way that makes the experience more real and more fun. While most interactive books are available online, there are also other mediums for such reading material.

The interactive book began with simple talking books. These books allowed children to read while listening to a recorded version of the story. The recording came complete with sound effects and character voices which enhanced the actual reading experience. It also helped those children who did not know how to read or had difficultly reading to enjoy the story.

Now, the interactive books that are available via the Internet take this idea one step further. By using a mouse, your child is now able to actually take part in the story and interact with the characters. Computer images make the story come alive, while the written words are displayed on the screen. Character voices are also heard. All of these features help give the story an added dimension, and help walk the child through the various experiences of each character. Interactive books also provide your child the opportunity to learn more about the computer, and can help prepare him or her for the use of the everyday technology that is becoming more and more familiar all the time.

There are many sites that offer interactive books, so finding one to suit your child should not be difficult. You can also find various resources on the Internet that will lead you to other similar sites and materials, all of which are designed with children in mind. You will also be able to choose books that match your child’s skill level, and compliment his or her interests. The options are numerous, and choosing books online can be even more fun than the traditional method of checking them out from a library. This is not, however, meant to discourage traditional library use, but is meant as another avenue by which to instill in your children a love of reading that will serve them all their lives.

The Advantages Of Private Schools Over Public Schools

The education system in the United States is in desperate times. The low pay that most school systems offer is one of the main causes. There is very little in the way of incentives for people to want to take up teaching because the vocation requires so much and gives so little in return. This has caused a crisis in the public education system making it difficult for the schools to operate at the maximum for the students that are involved. The lack of teachers means that most of the students will not get the one on one attention that is so desperately needed in these days. This is why so many parents are turning to the private schools to get their children the very best in the way of education.

The advantages that the private schools have over the public school system are vast. The one on one attention that is given to the students is very helpful for the entire workings of the school. In most cases the students are given far more attention and will in turn perform better when it comes time for the work to be performed on their own. This also allows for the students to spend more time on the subject matter before moving on to bring the students up to the same pace before a new lesson is learned.

This is one of the reasons that the public schools are so often failing when it comes to individual education methods. They are rushed through the lessons to keep going and make sure that all the subject matter is covered as set down by the government. The private schools do not fall under the same guidelines and therefore have an easier time being able to cover the lessons without leaving several of the children behind to try and understand for themselves.

The private school systems are far more appealing to the teachers of the world as well. Since there is more room for education and a lot less room for politics in the private school systems the teachers are far more interested in making sure that every student is above par in every subject. Barring any special circumstances that have been laid down by the law, the private school systems are not required to take part in the standardized testing that is so popular in the public school system.

This has made it that much more appealing when it comes to the methods that are being taught in the private schools. While many of them are based around a religion, there are a new crop of schools that are considered to be charter schools which offer all of the benefits of the private school system but are not faith based institutions. This has become a very popular occurrence in the education world. These new charter schools are popping up all over the country, some of which are directly connected to a specific college for higher learning.

Standing tall against the opposition, private schools have managed to gain the support of thousands and the chances for a better education that they offer are vast. The real downfall is the cost that is involved because the private schools are not supported by the tax system so they rely on the cost of the tuition to stay afloat each year.

The Basics Of A Good Home School Course Program

Reading, writing and arithmetic form the core studies that compose the basic curriculum for school grades one through 12. This basic curriculum is the same whether public, private and home schooling.

The major differences between the three types of schooling are that a public and private school setting is the delivering of education to children in a social setting and facilitated by professional instructor. Home school courses are taught to a child, and usually, within the confines of the family’s home under the teaching supervision of a parent.

Obviously, it is the desire of parents to provide the best education available for their children. Coupled with this desire is to control the educational environment as much as possible. Those controls include the provision of a safe environment and an education that reflects the values and beliefs of the child’s parents. These are two reasons why so many parents today have chosen to enroll their children in a home school course program to meet the educational needs of their kid.

There are four basic types of a home school course program that you can choose from. It includes home schooling through the Internet, computer software, videotape instruction and from textbooks.

Each of these type of a home school course is acceptable and should be selected by keeping one overriding factor in mind. That factor is based on choosing the program that best suits the learning style of your kid. For example, some kid are very visual in their learning process. Therefore, you may wish to consider the videotape instruction which is more appropriate. If your child enjoys working at the computer then perhaps the best home school course program to enroll in is through the Internet.

With home schooling becoming more popular, it is important to consult with the various levels of government that oversee the education of child. It is important that your home school course meets the educational guidelines as imposed by those governments.

Length Of Study In Home School

Because any home school course is facilitated by a parent or legal guardian of the child, the pace at which the children learn is completely up to the parent. However, there must be steady progress in the child’s educational process. If you choose to access the classroom materials via the Internet, often the Internet provider will grant to a license of up to 365 days for completion of that particular program course or curriculum.

Testing In Home School

In addition, many of the governments require that children enrolled in a home school course be tested to assess the learning being gained by the child. Some of this testing is required to be done on a yearly basis while some states require that testing be done every other year, it depends. Often, the test is administered by the parent teacher and can be submitted in accordance with the rules and regulations surrounding the home schooling.

Even if this is not a requirement in the area where you live, it is often a good idea to have your child tested on a yearly basis. This will help you to evaluate the curriculum as well as the progress you and your child are making in hid study.

The Amazing Value Of An Associate Degree Online

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 3:28 pm

Recent studies have shown more strongly than ever that getting an associate degree online is one of the smartest investments in the future a high school graduate can make. Traditionally many people have felt that an associate degree is just a stepping-stone to a bachelor degree, but this is quickly becoming the exception rather than the rule. Today’s students can get an associate degree online that puts them in the workforce sooner, costs less and is more targeted to their career choice.

No Typical Associate Degree Online Student

When you look for students who are pursuing an associate degree online, you won’t find one person who is “typical.” The range of students is astounding, with more diversity by far than you’ll find on a traditional college campus. Because of the financial savings and the flexibility of the schedule, there are more non-traditional students in an online program. In any given class, you might find:

Working parents who need to study at night or during work breaks and can’t attend classes on campus.

Military personnel and their spouses, who move around frequently and can’t commit to one campus location.

Students with disabilities who can work more comfortably and efficiently from home.

Those returning to get an associate degree online because they are older and might not feel comfortable in the classroom with students much younger than them.

Improving Your Life with an Associate Degree Online

The United States census, various educational and government agencies and even financial analysts have been taking a good, hard look at associate degree programs in recent years. When they compared information and statistics they discovered that the advantages of earning an associate degree online were overwhelming:

The average difference in salary between a high school graduate and an individual with an associate degree is in the six figures over a lifetime, with the typical difference over a lifetime of working being somewhere around $140,000.

Once an individual is granted an associate degree, he or she can typically begin earning about $130 more every week than his counterpart without a degree. For those with associate degrees in computers, engineering or accounting the difference is even greater.

Individuals with an associate’s degree are far less likely to be unemployed than those with only a high school education.

If you then figure in the money saved by pursuing an online degree instead of attending a traditional college, you’ll see just how valuable your degree can be. After all, attending an online college means you’ve:

Continued to make money by working while you attend classes.

Saved money on transportation (whether on gasoline and parking or public transportation).

Skipped the investment in activity fees, meals on campus and even additional clothing by studying at home.

Is it any wonder that one well-known financial analyst recently referred to the value of an associate degree as a “slam dunk” with massive payback for students? If you want to gain this payback for yourself, check out getting an associate degree online. It’s the best way to advance your career with the least financial outlay. You’ll see the return many times over.

The Awesome Power Of Magnetism - Folklore Facts And Possibilities

Magnetic forces are among the most potent power sources in the known universe. And just like the force of (1)gravity, magnetic forces are ever-present, constantly at work, and they have a dramatic impact on our daily lives. In fact, were it not for magnetism and all of its inherent forces, our species would not (could not) exist on this planet.

We owe our existence to magnetism

At the center of our small solar system resides a massive nuclear power plant. We call it the Sun. It is a rather puny, mediocre star &ndash as stars go. Still, its constant, countless nuclear explosions create unimaginable forces, one of which is referred to as the ’solar winds.’ By the time these radiation-laden solar winds reach Earth, they are still hundreds of thousands of degrees, and traveling at about 1,000,000 miles per hour. Yes &ndash that’s one MILLION miles per hour. That equates to about 16,666 miles per minute, or 278 miles per second. Were it not for the Earth’s natural magnetism, and massive magnetic field, the solar winds would course unimpeded over the planet’s surface. Remove the Earth’s magnetism and our beautiful blue planet would instantly become an uninhabitable place teeming with intense radiation, unbelievable winds, and temperatures capable of melting or disintegrating almost everything.

Magnetism was one of the first controllable power sources that man became aware of. Then, only naturally occurring magnets were present in the form of (2)lodestone. And while it is clear that humans became aware of magnetism thousands of years ago, it was not until much more recently that the powers were implemented for the benefit of the species. Save for folklore-based applications, the first known practical use of magnetism was in the making of the compass &ndash an invention of the Chinese in the 12th century AD.

An early application of magnetism

The Chinese used lodestones as early as the 4th century AD in a divination ritual called “Geomancy.” Geomancy, which is believed to be of Arabic origin, is about ‘reading’ various natural markings on the ground, or by having someone throw dirt in the air, and then reading the ’signs’ created by the pattern of the dirt after it falls to the ground. There are absolute ties between Geomancy and various religious belief structures. By using lodestones in the practice of Geomancy, the Chinese were able to create exciting, unique readable patterns that were unmatched by any other civilization of the era. Part of the allure of this practice in China was the fact that the dirt could move ‘on its own,’ even after it had hit the ground. Subtle shifts in gentle winds, or small vibrations on the ground were enough to cause the stationery dirt to move &ndash right in front of the eyes of believers.

Prehistoric navigation with magnetism

There is bacterium that is composed of single pieces of magnetite that form a string inside of its microscopic-sized body. It is actually a “living magnet” as the majority of its bulk is comprised of the magnetite pieces. The creation of minerals inside of living organisms is not uncommon. The teeth and bones of humans, for example, are minerals formed by, and inside of, living tissues. These have only recently been discovered, and it took an electron microscope set at 100,000x to see the miniscule magnetite chains. Many animals, including humans, have similar magnetic components. It is widely believed that because some animals are clearly using magnetism for their navigation, such as the notorious homing pigeons, that magnetic tissues and minerals exist for the host’s navigational purposes. Recently, some researchers have started to think it’s there for much more than just helping us find north. It is quite possible that magnetism, for example, guides the directional growth and strength of bones in humans. In humans, by the way, these tiny living magnetic systems are in our brains &ndash and maybe in other places as well.

Oddly, humans still don’t really know how magnetism works &ndash anymore than we know how gravity works. We have equations to express both, and rules to follow regarding both &ndash but we really don’t know how they work. It was not until the mid-20th century that man actually started to get a solid understanding of the rules of magnetism, and ways to implement it. In 1950, the average American household had fewer than five magnets employed. By the end of the century, the average household employed hundreds of magnets. They are everywhere in our culture today &ndash controlling and powering and amazing.

Magnetism and marriage

It was once believed, and not that long ago, that if you placed a piece of lodestone under the pillow of your spouse while they slept, in the morning, they would voluntarily tell all about their illicit, extra-marital affairs. They say all folklore has a basis in fact &ndash one’s mind boggles at contemplating how this one got started…

Magnetism and medicine

Late 1700’s, a Frenchman named Franz Anton (3)Mesmer announced that he had discovered “animal magnetism.” But not the way we use it colloquially &ndash meaning when one person attracts another. Franz Anton Mesmer believed the magnetism of the earth flowed around and through people. If it flowed correctly, you were healthy. If it didn’t, you got sick. He treated people by rubbing them with magnets. He held “s

The Art Of Video Game Design

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 9:57 am

Beginning in 1979, video games slowly started to invade homes and occupy young children and adults alike. The first video game was created in Japan and it has evolved greatly over the years. Video games have not only become a hobby for young children, but they have become an obsession for young adults. Individuals are constantly in competition with one another to have the latest and greatest video game. They also race one another to conquer all the levels of the most challenging games. With individuals constantly looking for new challenges, the area of video game design has increased in popularity.

Children are becoming fascinated with video games at a younger age. To prevent them from becoming zombies in front of the television, video game design companies are incorporation education, as well as physical activity to most of their video games. Games such as V-tech and Leap Frog use colors, numbers and words to educate young children on how to read and count. One recent game that has revolutionized the video game industry is Nintendo’s Wii. This game console uses video games to incorporate physical activity. Game users are required to use their physical skills to complete tasks such as fishing, bowling and tennis. While these games aim to educate and increase physical activity among youth, there are still traditional games on the market that simply aim to entertain.

What once started as a recreational activity, video gaming has now become a sport to some people. There are actually tournaments around the world where individuals compete against one another in the latest video games. Individuals also create teams to compete against individuals from all different countries. While most people think individuals play these games for fun, it is actually a very competitive sport. Individuals train for months, even years to master the skills need to conquer a game. They study each video game design and try to learn all the tricks and special features of each game. Individuals are not competing for bragging rights. Some tournaments offer prizes in excess of $500,000, proving that these games are not to be taken lightly.

With the increased popularity of video game tournaments and leisure activities, the career field of video game design is in high demand of qualified candidates. Colleges all over the country offer programs to teach students about video games and how to design them. Courses include work in graphic design, script writing and drawing. Classes are also offered in a variety of different specialties aimed to make individuals marketable in a variety of different fields. Students learn essential computer skills such as Photoshop, animation and cinematography. However, these computer skills are also important skills in different career fields, therefore opening numerous opportunities to graduates in this specific program

Upon completion of a video game design program, students can work for numerous different companies. Design companies are constantly looking for fresh thinkers and creative individuals to take their video games to new levels. Students in design programs learn how to conceptualize, design and plan animations and video games. They also learn how to produce and evolve character models and design levels in video games. Along with these important video game skills, students also learn marketing, business and entertainment law to make them a well-rounded candidate.

With a video game design degree, students can not only use their imaginations to create games, but they can also manage the production of games or be a critic with the skills they learn through this particular program. What was once thought of as simply entertainment has become an increasing popular industry.
