Why Ask The Professor?

I would like to touch on a subject most students probably never consider, namely, the great importance of asking questions to your professor. Ask! Never let this three letter word disappear from your life, always be sure to ask when in doubt. This will most likely prove to become one of your greatest assets on your long academic journey.

Always inquire your professor about things that might be unclear to you, but only and I repeat, only if this is important and vital for your particular course and only if it’s very relevant to the subject. Remember that university/college professors are humans too, I know it’s hard to comprehend, and they too hate it when hundreds of irrelevant questions are posed.

If you really want to know the importance of a good question, just ask your self how many times you have received certain important pieces of information through a question. Most likely, this must have occurred hundreds of times, hence my advice to you is:

Do not be afraid to pose a question when you are sure it’s both important and relevant to the subject. Also, don’t make your question sound sophisticated just to be rendered as sophisticated by the attendees, your asking because you want an answer not due to personal ego. Finally, I would like to end with some words I heard from a dean at Harvard a while ago:

“A Question ends with a Question mark”

It sounds so simple yet so many people tend to neglect this. I have to say, people are severely annoyed by those who make long winded comments under the “disguise” of a question. This is often seen on debates or at other types of public speakings, if you have a question, make sure it ends with a question mark! I hope you understood that, didn’t you?

Why A Tornado Occurs

Earth’s weather can produce various kinds of windstorm which include waterspouts, dust devils and tornadoes. Although they have the common features of a column of rotating air, they are actually formed through different processes. Dust devils and small whirlwinds are caused by severe local heating of the earth’s surface that makes the air rise rapidly. The interaction of air current high up, produce tornadoes and they are always accompanied by intense thunderstorms.

Though the US records the highest number of tornadoes it is Netherlands which is most prone to tornadoes. Late winter or early spring is the prime season in the US for the tornadoes. It is a time when there is instable climate in the country.

The birth of tornadoes takes place within thunderstorms. Most of them are produced in the supercell thunderstorms but hurricanes and squall lines can also cause tornadoes.

It is not yet known clearly about how tornadoes are actually formed. We conjecture winds from different directions results in the total thunderstorm rotating. Within it, the cold and warm air currents counteract and form an air column that spins, the mesocyclone ; this at times may result in a wall cloud that is a sure sign of an upcoming tornado.

This mesocyclone spins down the updraft of the cloud thus turning it into a funnel cloud. By the time it touches the ground, it turns into a tornado. It takes up the color of whatever debris it is sucking in. Depending on the landform on which it is moving tornadoes can be either invisible or partly visible.

The tornadoes move along with the source thunderstorm. The course of destruction rages from 30 feet to over half a mile. The tornadoes can travel anywhere from some yards to hundreds of miles Speeding at a rate as high as 300 miles an hour, with the updraft speed moving up to even a 180 miles an hour. Sometimes tornadoes last for a few seconds and sometimes for more than an hour; but in an average tornadoes last for about 15 minutes.

Distance learning is one of the flavors of the cyber highway. The coming has been fast and furious. Those that do not embrace it will be left behind. For those that are still quick to dismiss it, these are the reasons I think online learning will continue to explode.

1. Distance Learning simply makes economic sense. It is way cheaper than traditional learning. Since most distance learning schools don’t have build and maintain vast array of buildings, they are able to offer cheaper tuition to students. Any student (most students are) who is money conscious will prefer distance learning to traditional learning for this reason.

The cost to commute back and forth to school and home can be saved by money conscious students. The cost of a gallon of gas today makes this a no-brainer. Imagine being able to save all that gas money. This is music to the ears of most online learning students.

2. The flexibility to learn when you want appeals to distance learning students. Students are no longer constrained to learning at a certain time period. They can simple learn when they are ready. This could be as late as midnight.

This flexibility also applies to the time it takes to complete a degree program. You can take as long as you want to complete your program.

3. Distance learning has become the ultimate learn and earn. While I’m an advocate for some people to get their first degree through traditional colleges, it does not make sense to get your graduate degree this way. There is no reason you can’t get a graduate degree, especially master’s degree, while holding a job.

Doing it this way, gives you the opportunity to earn money while learning. While the job is putting money in your pocket, you are also gaining valuable work experience and seniority on the job. Your paycheck will continue to grow. You will also be getting promotions on the job. These things are on hold for those that wait till they get all their desired degrees before getting a job.

Most people are doing this today. This is one of the things that is fueling the distance learning explosion.

4. Distance learning provides you with valuable time with the family. Now, parents do not have to deal with studying and helping their kids with homework at the same time. They can spend this quality time with the kids while the kids are awake. Then when the kids go to bed, they can do their online classes. Believe me, with the time pressure parents are under today, this is a welcome relieve.

Because the arrival of distance learning has made our lives better, it is here to stay. Those that have not embraced it will be wise to do so. Otherwise, they maybe left behind. And being left behind in this cyber age could be detrimental to your earning power.

Why Learn German?

Do these words have almost the same spelling? Yes they do. Although different in pronunciation, the German and English languages came from the same language lineage. There are words which have translation from German to English and some words have not even been translated at all. These words are still used today by English speaking people around the world.

This just proves that the idea of learning the German language is possible. Even the idea of memorizing the complete language can happen no matter what age you are right now. You read it right; you can learn the German language anytime. Children are not the only ones who can learn and memorize a completely strange language. Although it may not be entirely too easy for adults to learn compared to children, the brain works completely the same.

Why Lighting Happens During A Thunderstorm

A dramatic concoction of electrical discharges and loud thunders along with torrential downpour, hail and sometimes snow is a thunderstorm. Everyday about 40000 thunderstorms occur in the world, most commonly in the equatorial region and in the United States, specifically in the Midwest and the South of the nation.

Moisture, instable climate and air lift are the three primary causes of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are examined to go through 3 distinct stages: the cumulus (or the developing) stage, the stage of maturity and that of dissipation.

The first stage takes place when warm and moist air flows upward replacing the cold air. The air rises for convectional movement or frontal clashes or even orographic lift. The moisture content in the mass of air cools down and forms cumulus clouds. Condensation of the moisture also causes convection.

The mature stage of the storm begins with the rising air meeting the tropopause. Then the clouds spread on top and gives the cloud its characteristic anvil shape. In case of sever storms the updrafts are so strong that they even punch up to the stratosphere from the tropopause.

Within the clouds the water droplets turn into raindrops and even ice particles at times. Theses particles become rain again as they fall. Sometimes the updraft is so strong that it forms larger ice particles which do not melt and come down to the earth as hail.

Lightning and Thunder

When electrical charge builds up in a thunderstorm then the lightning is formed. These electrically charged particles emits bright light and the electrical current heats up the air into a plasma mass which produces the acoustic shocks which we can hear as the roaring of the thunder.

It is not fully known exactly how the electrical discharge creates thunder. The widely accepted idea says that it is the polarization of the precipitation within the cumulus cloud that produces it. As the ice crystals and water droplets move along the earth’s electric field they take up positive and negative charges. The positively charged particles tend to go up while the negatively charged particles accumulate in the bottom of the cloud.

The oppositely charged particles attract each other but are insulated by the mass of air. When the charge builds quite strength, there might occur an electrical discharge within the cloud or between the clouds and even turn from the clouds to the ground. But one out of four thunders reaches the earth. Bolts of lightning moves at about 60000 miles an hour.

About 95% of the lightning is negative. This is because it is the negative charged particles that get discharged from the cloud. However 5% of the thunders are positive which travels down to the negatively charged ground. It was discovered only in the 1970s that the positive lightning is 6 to 10 times more powerful than the negative ones. It has the potential to become a threat to all mankind and technology.

Thunder forms when the lightning bolt heats its surroundings to a great extent and this makes it to expand and then contract fast. Sound travels slower than the light. This makes it possible for us to calculate how far the lightning is by counting the time between the light and the sound of the thunder. Sound travels at around one mile in 5 seconds. The thunders that occur about 20 miles away are usually not heard.
